Ein Deutsches Requiem by Johannes Brahms( )

688 editions published between 1940 and 2021 in 11 languages and held by 13,735 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Brahms's Requiem, completed in 1868, draws on the legacy of his forerunners, Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach. In setting texts from the German Bible, it deliberately departs from the models of the Catholic liturgy and imposes a sorrowing yet consolatory meditation on death and the Last Judgment, in the manner of a poignant and grandiose cradle song for the dead

One of the most charismatic and best-loved violinists of modern times, Germany's Anne-Sophie Mutter began her studies on the piano at the age of five. She shortly added violin lessons with Erna Hornigberger. In 1970 and again in 1974, she won first place in the Jugend Musiziert contest for young musicians. Choraline chorus rehearsal CDs are learning tools, not performances, and your vocal line is represented by an orchestral instrument, ensuring maximum clarity for your part while allowing you to hear other voice parts which are usually played by an organ. Additional clarity results from using the right-hand audio channel for your voice part and the left-hand channel for the other parts: adjusting the volume will therefore enable you to increase or decrease the volume of your part relative to the others. Neutral expression and tempi help you avoid bringing to rehearsal a performance style that might conflict with your conductor's aims
German requiem by Johannes Brahms( )

150 editions published between 1948 and 2019 in 6 languages and held by 2,977 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Brahms' fascination with music of the 16th to the 18th centuries was nurtured during his appointment in Vienna as conductor of the Singakademie. His own choral compositions had gradually moved from an almost pastiche Renaissance style towards a fully mature, Romantic approach, culminating in his large-scale choral masterpiece Ein deutsches Requiem. This performance is sung in a new English translation prepared by Lara Hoggard that fits the original German declamation and with the piano four-hands accompaniment written by Brahms himself
Violin concerto by Johannes Brahms( )

144 editions published between 1955 and 2020 in 8 languages and held by 2,859 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Although Brahms penned but one violin concerto, this one work is effectively a melting pot of some of the composer's finest ideas. Not only does the work stand as one of the greatest of all violin concertos, but it represents the very best of hte composer's creative ability. The Violin Concert (1879), like the Second Symphony of the previous year, is one of the composer's sunniest works, perhaps reflecting the fact that both were written at one of Brahm's favourite locations on the Carinthian 'Worther Sea'. This is Brahms at his most lyrical, a heady mix of autumnal mellowness tinged with melancholy, and buoyant high spirits. Written for the great violin virtuoso Joachim, it was and still is an enormous technical challenge to the soloist. The long 'symphic' introduction is one of the composer's finest creations and the entire lengthy first movement is a gradual unfolding of song-like simplicity. The Adagio contains a nostalgic melody for solo oboe whilst the finale is a brilliant Hungarian dance. Unbottoned in its gaiety, it displays orchestral writing of great originality, with trilling winds and jaunty high spirits. The violin Sonata No. 2 is one of seven instrumental sonatas with piano accompaniement. Written in 1866 whilst Brahms was "awaiting the arrival of a dear friend" (Herman Spries) at Lake Thun, it is lyrical and serene, with many long-spun cantabile melodies."--insert, pages 2-3
